SEEKING WISDOM FROM WAR'S MORAL INJURIES

“Warfare reality” is different from “Peace reality.” It is designed around two things: killing and the avoidance of injury or being killed. It goes on everywhere in the warfare environment, 24/7.  Sometimes we adjust too much towards killing or avoiding being killed.  Sometimes, it's a matter of being in a war for too long or too many times. When those things happen, they may reveal things about us (and about others) which have violated the things we grew up believing in.

 

We are talking about Moral Injury, an injury to our deepest self, our soul. Hence, when we come home from war, some of us "Come Home Haunted."
